Cambelt, Wet Belt & Clutch Questions
Straight answers about cambelts, wet belts and clutches, and how getting a quote works.
Getting a quote
What work do you cover?
Cambelt and timing belt replacement, wet belt (belt-in-oil) replacement including Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Ford EcoBlue and 1.2 PureTech engines, timing chain replacement including Renault and Nissan 1.2 engines, and clutch and flywheel replacement. These are planned, bigger jobs — not general servicing, diagnostics or breakdown callouts.
Which areas do you cover?
Hereford and the rest of Herefordshire, and Gloucestershire. Jobs closer to Hereford are preferred, so for Gloucestershire it is best to send your postcode and we will confirm.
How do I get a quote?
Fill in the quote form with your registration, postcode and the job you need. Your enquiry goes to our local partner mechanic in Hereford, who will contact you with a quote.
Who carries out the work?
This website is an enquiry service. Your enquiry is passed to our local partner mechanic in Hereford, who provides the quote and carries out the work.
Do you do breakdowns or emergency callouts?
No. The focus is planned jobs — cambelts, wet belts, timing chains and clutches — booked in on a date that suits you. For a breakdown, contact your breakdown provider.
Why do you need my registration?
The registration identifies the exact engine fitted to your car. That tells us whether it has a cambelt, a wet belt or a chain, and which parts are needed, so the quote is accurate.
Is the quote free?
Yes. Asking for a quote is free and there is no obligation to go ahead.
Cambelts
How often should a cambelt be changed?
Each engine has its own interval set by the manufacturer, based on age and mileage — whichever comes first. Send your registration and the interval for your engine can be checked.
What happens if a cambelt breaks?
On many engines the valves and pistons can collide if the belt breaks, which can cause serious and expensive engine damage. On others the engine simply stops. Either way the car will not run until the belt is replaced.
Are there warning signs that a cambelt is due?
Often there are none. A cambelt can look and sound fine right up until it fails, which is why it is replaced at the recommended interval rather than when it shows symptoms.
Wet belts
What is a wet belt?
A wet belt, or belt-in-oil, is a timing belt that runs inside the engine in contact with the engine oil instead of behind an external cover.
Which engines have a wet belt?
Common examples are the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, the 1.2 PureTech turbo petrol used by Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall, and some Ford EcoBlue diesels. The exact engine matters, so send your registration to confirm.
What are the signs of a wet belt problem?
Signs can include the oil pressure warning light, the engine warning light, reduced power, a rattle, or black particles of belt material in the oil. On some PureTech engines belt debris can also affect the brake servo vacuum, so the brake pedal can feel hard.
Why does belt debris matter?
As a wet belt wears it can shed material into the oil. That debris can block the oil pick-up strainer and starve the engine of oil pressure, which can cause serious engine damage.
Clutches
How do I know if my clutch is worn?
Common signs are the engine revs rising without the car speeding up (slipping), a biting point high up the pedal, juddering when pulling away, difficulty selecting gears, or a burning smell.
What is a dual mass flywheel?
A dual mass flywheel is a two-part flywheel with springs inside that smooths out engine vibration. Many diesel and some petrol cars have one. When it wears it can rattle or knock, especially at idle or when stopping and starting.
Should the flywheel be replaced with the clutch?
If the car has a dual mass flywheel that is worn, it is usually replaced at the same time, because the gearbox has to come off to reach either. Your quote will say whether it is needed.
