Quick answerA worn clutch shows up as slipping, a high biting point, juddering or trouble selecting gears. Many modern cars also have a dual mass flywheel, which is often replaced at the same time. Hereford Cambelt & Clutch passes clutch enquiries from Herefordshire and Gloucestershire to a local partner mechanic in Hereford, who quotes from your registration.

Signs your clutch needs replacing

  • Engine revs rise but the car doesn’t speed up (slipping)
  • The biting point is high up the pedal
  • Juddering when pulling away
  • Difficulty getting into gear, or grinding
  • A burning smell after hill starts or heavy traffic
  • Noise when the clutch pedal is pressed or released

Dual mass flywheels

Many diesel cars, and some petrol cars, use a dual mass flywheel to absorb engine vibration. When it wears you may hear a rattle or knock at idle, feel vibration through the pedal, or notice a clunk when the engine stops and starts. Because the gearbox has to come off to reach the clutch, a worn flywheel is normally replaced at the same time.

What is usually replaced

  • Clutch kit: clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing
  • Dual mass flywheel, if it is worn
  • Concentric slave cylinder, where fitted and needed
  • Clutch fluid, where required

Your quote will set out exactly what your car needs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my clutch is worn?

Common signs are the engine revs rising without the car speeding up (slipping), a biting point high up the pedal, juddering when pulling away, difficulty selecting gears, or a burning smell.

What is a dual mass flywheel?

A dual mass flywheel is a two-part flywheel with springs inside that smooths out engine vibration. Many diesel and some petrol cars have one. When it wears it can rattle or knock, especially at idle or when stopping and starting.

Should the flywheel be replaced with the clutch?

If the car has a dual mass flywheel that is worn, it is usually replaced at the same time, because the gearbox has to come off to reach either. Your quote will say whether it is needed.

How long does a clutch last?

There is no fixed interval. It depends on how and where the car is driven — lots of town driving, towing or hill starts wear a clutch faster.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

A slipping clutch usually gets worse, and it can leave you unable to pull away. It is best to get it quoted and booked in before it fails completely.

Do you replace clutches on vans?

Send the registration and details of the van and we will confirm whether it can be quoted.
