Quick answerA wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine in the oil. As it wears it can shed material that blocks the oil pick-up and lowers oil pressure. Common wet belt engines include the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech. Send your registration and our local partner in Hereford will quote for the belt replacement and oil system checks your engine needs.

What is a wet belt?

Most timing belts run dry, behind a cover on the outside of the engine. A wet belt runs inside the engine, bathed in the engine oil. The design is quieter and was intended to last longer, but on some engines the belt can deteriorate earlier than expected.

Why worn wet belts cause problems

As the belt material breaks down, small pieces can collect in the sump and block the strainer on the oil pick-up. Less oil reaches the engine, oil pressure drops, and if it is not dealt with the engine can be badly damaged.

Common wet belt engines

  • Ford 1.0 EcoBoost — Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport, B-Max, C-Max, Puma, Transit Connect and Transit Courier
  • 1.2 PureTech turbo — Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008 and Rifter; Citroën C3, C3 Aircross, C4 and C5 Aircross; DS models; Vauxhall Corsa, Mokka, Crossland, Grandland and Astra
  • Ford EcoBlue diesel — some Transit and passenger car versions

The same model can be sold with different engines, so always check by registration.

Warning signs

  • Oil pressure warning light
  • Engine management light or reduced power
  • Black particles of belt material on the dipstick or in the oil
  • Rattling or unusual engine noise
  • On some PureTech engines, a hard brake pedal caused by debris affecting the vacuum pump

What a wet belt job typically involves

  • Replacing the timing belt and tensioner
  • Checking the sump and oil pick-up for belt debris, and cleaning where needed
  • Fresh oil of the correct specification and a new oil filter
  • Checking oil pressure afterwards

Exactly what is needed depends on the engine and its condition, and your quote will explain it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a wet belt?

A wet belt, or belt-in-oil, is a timing belt that runs inside the engine in contact with the engine oil instead of behind an external cover.

Which engines have a wet belt?

Common examples are the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, the 1.2 PureTech turbo petrol used by Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall, and some Ford EcoBlue diesels. The exact engine matters, so send your registration to confirm.

What are the signs of a wet belt problem?

Signs can include the oil pressure warning light, the engine warning light, reduced power, a rattle, or black particles of belt material in the oil. On some PureTech engines belt debris can also affect the brake servo vacuum, so the brake pedal can feel hard.

Why does belt debris matter?

As a wet belt wears it can shed material into the oil. That debris can block the oil pick-up strainer and starve the engine of oil pressure, which can cause serious engine damage.

Does the oil type matter on a wet belt engine?

Yes. Wet belt engines are designed for a specific oil specification. Using the wrong oil can speed up belt wear, so it is important to use the oil the manufacturer specifies.

What is involved in replacing a wet belt?

Typically the belt and tensioner are replaced, the oil and filter are changed, and the sump and oil pick-up are checked for belt debris and cleaned if needed. What is required depends on the engine and its condition.

Can I keep driving with the oil warning light on?

An oil pressure warning means the engine may not be getting enough oil. Stop as soon as it is safe and do not keep driving. Then send your details for a quote.
