Quick answerA cambelt (timing belt) keeps an engine’s camshaft and crankshaft in time and is replaced at the manufacturer’s age or mileage interval. Hereford Cambelt & Clutch handles cambelt replacement enquiries across Herefordshire and Gloucestershire: send your registration and our local partner mechanic in Hereford will quote for the correct kit for your engine.
What does a cambelt do?
The cambelt — also called a timing belt — links the crankshaft to the camshaft so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment. It is a toothed rubber belt, and like any rubber part it wears with age and use.
Why change it before it fails?
A worn cambelt often gives no warning. If it snaps or jumps a tooth on an interference engine, the valves can hit the pistons. Changing the belt on schedule is a planned job; a snapped belt can mean a far bigger repair or a replacement engine.
What is usually replaced
- The timing belt
- Tensioner and idler pulleys (usually supplied as a kit with the belt)
- The water pump, where it is driven by the cambelt
- Auxiliary drive belt if needed
- Coolant, where the water pump is replaced
Exactly what is included depends on your engine. Your quote will set it out.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How often should a cambelt be changed?
Each engine has its own interval set by the manufacturer, based on age and mileage — whichever comes first. Send your registration and the interval for your engine can be checked.
What happens if a cambelt breaks?
On many engines the valves and pistons can collide if the belt breaks, which can cause serious and expensive engine damage. On others the engine simply stops. Either way the car will not run until the belt is replaced.
Are there warning signs that a cambelt is due?
Often there are none. A cambelt can look and sound fine right up until it fails, which is why it is replaced at the recommended interval rather than when it shows symptoms.
Should the water pump be changed at the same time?
On many engines the water pump is driven by the cambelt and sits behind the same covers, so it is commonly replaced at the same time. Your quote will say what is included for your engine.
I don't know if my car has a cambelt or a chain. Does that matter?
Yes — they are different jobs. Send your registration and we will confirm whether your engine has a cambelt, a wet belt or a timing chain.
I bought the car used and there is no record of the belt being done. What should I do?
If there is no evidence of when it was last changed, many owners treat it as due. Send your registration and mileage for a quote.
